Buoyancy Certificate
Buoyancy Certificate Information:
All vessels “putting to water” MUST HAVE A VALID BUOYANCY CERTIFICATE no matter the size of the motor, length of the vessel or if inland or to sea. LIVES ARE AT RISK IN THE EVENT OF AN INCIDENT.
Buoyancy Certificates must comply with certain mandatory requirements and your surveyor can only accept a Buoyancy Certificate if it complies with these regulations.
Attached is a link to the Marine Notice explaining the Regulations with regards to:
- Requirements for inland or sea going vessels
- Requirements for Fully inflatable, Semi rigid, Fibreglass and Metal construction vessels
- Requirements showing the types of acceptable buoyancy materials
- Requirements showing the life span of the different buoyancy materials
- Requirements for the inspection of the buoyancy material
- Requirements for the format and wording of the buoyancy certificate.
- Requirements stipulating who can issue a buoyancy certificate

Buoyancy
Fees for buoyancy certificates are subject to length of vessel, type of buoyancy medium, type of vessel and location.
In order for a new buoyancy certificate to be issued:
- The vessel has to be viewed and inspected to check the general condition and to ensure no modifications have been undertaken since date of issue of the last buoyancy certificate.
- It is best if the vessel on the trailer is weighed to determine the gross weight before making the booking. This means that the weight can be checked easily and there is no need for the cutting of holes in the deck to inspect the buoyancy medium.
