Safety Equipment
Fixit Boating
It is important to realise that safety equipment is there TO SAVE YOUR LIFE... given this you must make sure it can do so in the event you need to use it. Often vessel owners regard safety equipment as a “grudge expense” because they never use it by the time the next set of flares is required etc. Accept this expense as “part of boating” and budget accordingly. Source safety equipment at the best price as well as with the longest date to expiry from date of purchase so you get value for money over an extended period.

VERY IMPORTANT:
All vessels “putting to water” MUST HAVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. No matter the size of the motor, length of the vessel or if inland or to sea…
LIVES ARE AT RISK IN THE CASE OF AN INCIDENT.
1. Each category of vessel has different Safety Equipment requirements.
2. I, as your Surveyor, am aware of these requirements and can advise accordingly. This as I have the qualifications and training to advise on these requirements.
3. Safety equipment is available at time of survey.
4. Small stock levels are maintained to ensure flares and all safety equipment products with expiry dates have maximum life span.
5. At time of purchase it is important to check expiry dates of items purchased.
6. Often vessel owners will buy an item off the shelf that is already partially expired. For example the fire extinguisher has to be valid for the FULL 365 day period
of the Certificate of Fitness. If purchased from a supplier that holds stock the fire extinguisher could have been on the shelf for 3 months before date of purchase.
Given this it only has 9 months left to be valid and is thus not valid for the complete 12 month/365 day Certificate of Fitness period.
7. Safety equipment is supplied at competitive prices and on sight, thereby ensuring:
a) Immediate compliance with deficiencies stipulated per the Survey.
b) Immediate compliance should you purchase the safety equipment required at time of Survey.
c) This convenience saves the vessel owner, the need to source and buy from alternative suppliers.
d) This convenience saves the vessel owner time and the cost to drive around and acquire safety equipment.
e) The convenience of this supplying of safety equipment results in a considerable saving to vessel owners,
given the fact that safety equipment is supplied by a SAMSA surveyor, who is qualified to advise what is needed.
This prevents the purchase of safety equipment that is not required and one having to return to suppliers.
8. Courier services can be arranged to drop safety equipment at your doorstep.
Place your order with Alta on 064 830 1989 or alta@fixitboating.co.za, so she can forward your order.
9. Refer to www.fixitboating.co.za website to:
a) To view comprehensive lists of safety equipment requirements per category of vessel.
b) In order to assist and Guide the Vessel Owner / Owner Representative to prepare the vessel for a Safety survey before the Surveyor arrives there are attached
Safety Survey Checklists for each category of vessels. The person presenting the vessel for survey must complete this to the best of their ability before their Surveyor arrives.
c) To view the safety equipment requirements, costs and a link to show how to use these items and an explanation as to why these items form part of your safety equipment list. Given their experience of over 20 years Fixit Boating can supply the correct equipment with a maximum possible life span at competitive prices.
