Training

The Nautic Maritime Training Academy (NMTA) offer theoretical and practical training in all aspects of vessel operation and maintenance and provide crew training that maximizes vessel operation and efficiency.
The Academy has South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) accreditation for a number of courses relating to Certificates of Competence that only a few training facilities have in the country .
Besides our commitment to offering you the best training possible, we specialise in training for both individuals or groups. Our expert training will ensure that you achieve the standards required whilst having the adventure of a lifetime.
The Academy is headed by Neil de Villiers and Ian Allison, who have a combined total of over 50 years of experience as captains in both Charter and Vessel delivery capacities.  The lecture and exam venue is situated in the Viking building on the corner of Neptune and Carlisle streets in Paarden Island, Cape Town.
The class, exam and practical is only done once and the SAMSA certificate is valid for life. The course is not difficult and we are often told that the course is informative and interesting.

Categories of Skipper’s tickets (Certificates of Competency)

Power driven vessels not exceeding 15 horsepower, sailing dinghies and non-power driven vessels of less than 7 metres in overall length do not require the operator to have a skippers ticket. Any power driven vessel of more than 15 HP or sailing vessels of over 9m in length require the boats’ operator to have a Certificate of Competence commonly referred to as a Skipper’s Ticket. The Academy offers Certificates of Competence for vessels of both under and over 9m in length. Most other training facilities cannot do so.

PRIVATE SKIPPER CLASSES (if requested)
If you would like the privacy of your own lecture and training there is an addittional fee of R1500.
One or two candidate classes are much faster to complete because of the direct lecture and fewer number of general questions.

SKIPPER TRAINING RATES AND FEES:

1.  Inland Waters – dams, rivers and harbours – R3550
2.  Inland Waters and 1 Nautical Mile Offshore – R3550
3.  Inland Water and 15 Nautical Mile Offshore – R3950
4.  Over 9m will be quoted separately.
The above fee is the full price for the complete course and includes the SAMSA fee, training class, training material, exam material, examiner fees, the use of Nautic’s boat for the practical and the collection of your skipper ticket from SAMSA.
Ensure that the training facility you choose clearly states their fee includes training and training materials, the use of their vessel for the examination well as the fee you pay to SAMSA.. often schools only highlight their fee not mentioning the additional fees due for the use of their vessel or those due to SAMSA
Ensure that the training facility you choose clearly states whether they will collect your final skipper ticket from SAMSA or if you are to follow up and collect

On-line skippers Training. Whilst it is possible to forward you the study materials, to study by yourself, you will still need to be examined by a SAMSA appointed examiner, given this, the Academy does not encourage self study.
Often the fee for the study material when added to the fee for the SAMSA examiner results in a TOTAL excessive expense that is often not disclosed to candidates when they decide to follow a route that appears to be “easier” or more convenient.
